Climbing Support

Talkeetna Air Taxi (TAT) specializes in
glacier landings and air transport to various peaks in the Alaska Range for climbers and back-country skiers.

Climbers are our primary concern and focus. Paul Roderick (owner), is a climber with experience on Denali and other peaks in the area. He offers first hand knowledge of route information, keeps an eye on current conditions and climbers, and adds insight into what it takes to climb in Alaska.

We feel that our climbing services go beyond what you might expect, since we are climbers, back country skiers and outdoor enthusiasts just like you. Paul Roderick, the owner, is the only climber/glacier pilot in Talkeetna and knows what it takes to climb in Alaska. The adventure possibilities in this area are endless, and we would be happy to give you some ideas and/or help you plan your excursion.

If you are planning a trip to Mt. McKinley, Hunter, Foraker, the Ruth Glacier, or other remote or unclimbed peaks in the Alaska Range, getting you there, checking on your progress, and getting you back is what we do best. TAT offers you:

  • A climber bunkhouse and gear storage - both free of charge!
  • A DHC-3t Turbine Otter(holds eight climbers and all gear and climbs like a homesick angel returning to heaven), three Cessna 185's(holds 3 + gear) and three DeHavilland Beavers(holds 4 + gear)
  • Logistics support, from Anchorage accommodations to van service/airport shuttle arrangements
  • Up-to-date route information, photos, and route checks
  • Remote and unclimbed peak information in the Alaska Range and the Talkeetna Mountains
  • Discounts for large groups (5 or more) as well as for early bookings.

Our home - your base in Talkeetna

Our vintage log office at the Talkeetna State Airport provides logistical assistance along with Alaskan style hospitality. Join us on our huge front porch for the best barbeques in town, ascent stories, route conditions and information swapping. We also have a covered pavilion for gear sorting and organizing. Our library of books, photos, magazines and hundreds of slides are available for your use and enjoyment.

    McKinley Base Camp

From May through early July the air services of Talkeetna jointly operate the Base Camp for most routes on McKinley, Foraker and Hunter at the 7,200 ft. level on the southeast fork of the Kahiltna Glacier. Lisa Roderick, Base Camp Manager, welcomes you to the mountains. She hands out sleds from our cache and operates a CB radio to transmit weather information each evening. She will let us know as soon as you arrive back from your climb so a pick up can be arranged.

The flight from Talkeetna to your Base Camp is an incredible experience which will fire your imagination. The flight time is about 35 minutes aboard one of our ski equipped Cessnas or DeHavilland aircraft which accommodate three to eight climbers and gear. We also offer close-up route inspections and scenic side trips into the Great Gorge of the Ruth Glacier and the Don Sheldon Amphitheater.
